Cool Melon Mosaic Contest + A Clean-And-Eclectic Card

Good afternoon papercrafting friends!
Before I get going on my card posts for the weekend
(and happy National Scrapbooking Day to everyone as well!)
I want to introduce you to my other blog,

This is where I share gardening tips, homesteading experience,
agrarian literature via Wendell Wednesday,
and of course, lots and lots of fabric.

Today I'm copying my contest entry post for a fabric mosaic challenge
hosted by Gotham Quilts, in particular because the inspiration photos
are plenty wonderful on their own and after working with a little fabric to clear
off my space this morning I'm ready to use these same photos as card inspiration.

Good morning all!
I'm excited to participate in the Cool Melon Mosaic Contest at Stitched in Color
and sponsored by Gotham Quilts.

These inspiration photos are just too wonderful to resist:

So, with all that gorgeous inspiration to get the color ideas flowing,
here is my fabric mosaic.  It includes a botanical, of course, some very modern
fabric choices and even the neutral polkas, which were inspired by the melon balls
in the third photo :).

I've included favorite designers like Tula Pink (Chipper fox),
Anna Maria Horner, Carolyn Friedlander, Alexia Abegg, Allison Glass,
Lotta Jansdotter, and Birch Organics.

What a lark through these Gotham fabrics I had.
Making the mosaic (and I made a few) was almost as much fun
as putting real fabrics side-by-side in a shop...
except you can't get that wonderful feeling under your fingers.

While you're here, please take a quick moment to enter for my Tula Pink Book Giveaway;
the link is in the righthand sidebar for you!

So, that's a little taste of what it's like over at KTC's sister blog, Gardener's Thread.
And note: you papercraft ladies are of course MORE THAN WELCOME
to enter for that Tula Pink Giveaway as well.
MORE THAN WELCOME :)

But now, I promised a card inspired by my fabric mosaic as well, didn't I?
Yes, I did.

It's a Clean-and-Eclectic this time, and it was a blast to make.

The lighting today is washing out these light melon pinks, which is irritating.
Still, you get the idea.

Here are some challenges:

TimeOut Challenge #56: Case Kay Miller
While there is a lot to love on Kay's card,
I especially like the splatters and big scroll flourish
streaming out from the blossoms.

JUGS #342: Word Week -- BUTTERFLY

Sweet Stampin': May Flowers

Fantasy Stampers #62: Flower Power
(I'll be back with another card for this particular challenge soon,
so do stay tuned! :)

  3. Scrolling through your posts for the last couple of days and getting caught up on your creativity flow. Wonderful cards and I love the fabric mosiac, Kathryn! How wonderful that you had the joy of a young fellow crafter and I adore his creation. It's a perfect example of art by a child without any adult 'assistance' urging something more than a youngster naturally produces. I get so discouraged when parents/grandparents feel it's necessary to control the creative process so that something 'acceptable' is created. Or worse, when an adult creates something and then posts it a having been done by their 10 year old simply because the 10 year old was at the craft table as it was being created! OK, getting off my soapbox now. :-D

    1. You stay up on that soapbox, Connie. It is difficult not to "direct" a child's creativity into what we want to see from them. It's difficult to allow the mess, and a good deal of wastage--even of valuable materials. I still have a lot of blocks about fine art to work through, because I take out my "nice" paints and a canvas and that voice in the back of my head says, Don't you Waste This--it's Expensive.... And creativity totally seizes up. While I try to teach them about coloring in the lines during homeschool time--for small-motor control and dexterity and detail-orientedness--during our true art time, it's all open. Yes, it's a bit more stressful for me. But they've watched enough that they know to be careful. Usually they are more upset over a spill or streak than I am. What matters is that they are trying out their own creative wings--and that is worth ALL the effort of restraining myself from trying to mold them. I also try not to praise in ways that link their success to what I think. Instead of "I love it!" (unless it's a card made for me :), I say, "Wow, look at all your colors!" or "What is your story behind this picture?" so that THEY can say what THEY think, critique their OWN work, make their OWN decisions about it. Ultimately, that's far better than getting their validation just from me. They will learn to listen to themselves and validate themselves. So stay up on that soapbox, Connie--and I hope it has enough room for two :)
